Meet the new owners of South Bend Bistro

David Stofle and Culley Calkins are the new owners of South Bend Bistro, a fine dining restaurant in The Village at Sunriver. They invite community members and visitors to celebrate their grand reopening on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and Wednesday, Jan. 8 as a way to thank everyone who has contributed to making South Bend Bistro what it is today. Reservations are recommended and can be made by visiting South Bend Bistro’s website, calling 541-593-3881 or on the OpenTable app.

They look forward to welcoming the new year with friends and family by celebrating the fresh beginning of South Bend Bistro.

Stofle has worked at South Bend Bistro for more than 10 years, and he is a level two sommelier with an incredible encyclopedic knowledge of wine, food, and beverages. His friendly and knowledgeable service as well as his technical expertise has been a huge asset for South Bend Bistro for quite some time.

Calkins has worked at South Bend Bistro for five years as the general manager and has more than 30 years of food and beverage industry experience. Calkins has worked in Sunriver, and he is highly recognizable for his time spent behind the bar at Marcello’s and Sunriver Brewing Co. His expertise with food and beverage knows no limits and his welcoming and familiar style of service is thoroughly embraced by all.

After working for the last five years together, Calkins and Stofle were looking for an opportunity to have a place of their own and had asked owner Laura Bliss for the first right of refusal in the case that she ever wanted to sell South Bend Bistro. Bliss graciously obliged when she decided to sell the restaurant, and Calkins and Stofle were able to acquire the restaurant as the new owners on Dec. 16, 2024.

Calkins and Stofle have long been the stronghold of the restaurant and are passionate about the experiences they are able to create at such a special restaurant. They have no intentions of any major changes and are instead more focused on putting their own spin on what is already an incredibly intimate and inviting place to share delicious discoveries. They aspire to grow the business from a hidden gem in the heart of Sunriver to a more accessible and discoverable destination in Central Oregon.

They have already brought a local’s special back to the forefront of operations. There is an email list for those interested in signing up on their website southbendbistro.com that goes out to everyone detailing what the special will be. Wednesdays are typically the day that the specials are run and locals who mention the promotional email receive 20% off the price of the special!

Sunrover Dog Daycare

On their first date, Jeanette Moore told her now husband Dustin Moore that her dream job was

owning a dog daycare.

More than 10 years later, she and Dustin are realizing that goal.

They invite anyone curious to learn more about their business to stop by for a tour and to ask questions.

“Our goal is to have a place for dog owners whether they live nearby or are visiting Sunriver to take their dogs while they are enjoying everything there is to do in Sunriver and nearby,” Jeannette said.

She is working with several rental agencies who are excited about the dog daycare.

“Many rental agencies allow dogs at the rental homes, but the dogs can’t be left alone or need to be in a crate,” Jeanette said. “Now visitors can take their dogs to Sunrover, and the dogs have a large area to play and there’s always someone there to take care of them.”

Rates are $25 for five hours; $48 for a full day and $55 for overnight stays. The facility is 3,200 square feet with three separate play areas. The daycare can take a maximum of 40 dogs, and it is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

“We have plans to eventually expand, including having a place for dog trainers to work with dogs inside,” she said. “We also have a careful screening process, so we are making sure your dog has the best experience, depending on their temperament, size and energy level.”

The owner of two dogs, Jeanette said she loves bringing her dogs with her when her family travels.

“We created a place where people can drop off their dogs and go do things where they can’t take their dogs,” she said. “Dog owners can relax knowing their dog is safe, and in a fun environment because we are mindful of what dogs need.”

The dog daycare is 56870 Enterprise Drive in Sunriver. For additional information, visit sunroverdogdaycare.com; call 541-209-0053 or email info@sunroverdogdaycare.com.

The Village at Sunriver

Happen

A husband’s birthday wish wasn’t for himself.

Rather, it was for his wife to use her creativity to open a boutique.

And that’s the start of the story of Happen, a home and gift boutique in The Village at Sunriver.

Sierra Gealon and her mother, Gretchen Weaver, are the co-owners of Happen.

They invite community members to attend the boutique’s grand opening 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13. There will be a ribbon cutting at 5:15 p.m. along with a chance to win a gift card to the store. There will be a discount on items for local community members.

Back to how Happen happened.

“My children and I took my husband to breakfast for his birthday, and he made a wish for me to start a business,” Sierra, 32, said. “We went for a walk in The Village and saw the store front near Hot Lava Bakery was available. He said to me, let’s make this happen.”

A builder of custom homes, Ikaika Gealon helped her design and build the store’s interior.

“My mom and I always wanted to do something together,” Sierra said. “My sister makes jewelry that we sell at the store and my mom makes custom handbags.”

Warm and cozy, the store has something for everyone and every occasion. There are candles to cards, infant clothes and children’s toys, glassware to vases and linens to baskets.

“Every item has a story because my mom and I carefully consider what we want to sell, making an effort to sell locally made items along with items made by women or women-owned businesses,” Sierra said. “We are planning on having holiday items in November.”

They also plan to have workshops such as how to make a wreath, how to wrap gifts, holiday decorating, flower arranging and ideas for table settings.

“My mom and I always dreamed of opening a boutique together,” Sierra said. “We want to be a part of the Sunriver community where locals can find unique, meaningful and heirloom gifts or for their own homes.”

Happen is located in The Village at Sunriver, Suite 120. Call 541-815-4425, email Gealon.sierra@gmail.com or visit http://www.happenhome.com.

Db Appraisals in the

Sunriver Business Park

After retiring as the owner of The Wooden Jewel, Denise Bryant has launched a new career as a “jewelry detective.”

Her new business is Db Appraisals where she assists her clients in investigating their jewelry to provide a certified appraisal.

“The primary reason for a certified appraisal is for insurance and legal purposes,” Denise shared. “A certified appraisal is a higher standard to evaluate jewelry pieces, and it is held up in a court of law. Insurance companies would prefer to have a certified appraisal as well so they know it will hold up in a court of law.”

A member of the National Association of Jewelry Appraiser, Denise has earned several certificates to qualify to provide certified appraisals.

“I enjoy the science side of gems and jewelry,” she said. “I love looking for clues including the jeweler’s stamp and the cut and quality of the gems. An antique piece of jewelry may take time to investigate when and where it was crafted.”

Denise said a certified appraisal is more than weighing the metal such as gold or looking at the quality of the gems.

“There are high standards that go into evaluating a piece including testing the stones and the metal,” she said. “I recently evaluated a ring where the gold band was marked 18K and it was only 14K. I also make sure the gems are authentic and not man made.”

An appraisal for one piece of jewelry is $165 and each additional piece of jewelry is $130. It takes one to two weeks to have a piece evaluated. If you are interested in learning more or making an appointment, please contact Denise at 541-390-0830 or Denisebryant3433@gmail.com to arrange a time to visit her in her Sunriver office.

Cari Welch is the owner and licensed professional counselor at A Turning Point Counseling in the Sunriver Business Park.

Welch shared A Turning Point Counseling is a safe and confidential space providing mental and emotional health care services to individuals, couples and families with a desire to bring help and healing to those who are hurting in south Deschutes County.

“I chose the name A Turning Point Counseling because when I was seeing a counselor it was the catalyst that helped me reach a turning point in my life that brought me healing and freedom,” she shared. “I describe myself as having a sensitive heart and compassionate spirit. I am here to help people reach their own paths to healing.”

Welch loves living in beautiful Central Oregon with adventure waiting right outside her door.

Using hiking as an analogy for her work, she said hikers often discover rock cairns; piles of stones made for marking the path ahead. Too often, she said, people think they don’t need to seek assistance which leads to being stuck in a rut or repetitively running into the same wall.

“A Turning Point Counseling helps keep people moving in the right direction,” Welch shared. “Counseling can be that cairn for each of us; a turning point in our journey to greater healing and health that gets us moving in the way we want to go.”

Welch’s experience and education enables her to offer effective and individualized outpatient mental health care.

“Part of my work is teaching people to train themselves to listen to their gut feelings about a situation, then trusting that gut feeling, understanding we often have the answers but ignore them,” she said.

Her goal is to provide a safe, confidential space where clients will find support, healing and growth by challenging harmful beliefs, bringing awareness of their inner strengths and charting a path forward into health and healing.

“My goal is to be there for you at every step of your journey; to help you grow from your struggles, heal from your pain, and move forward to where you want to be in your life,” she said.
