Sunriver Music Festival’s “Play On!”

Pickleball Tournament: May 31 – June 1

The first pickleball tournament to benefit Sunriver Music Festival will take place May 31 and June 1 at the Fort Rock Park Pickleball Complex.

Players can register for the “Play On!” tournament at www.PickleballBrackets.com. The cost is $75 per player. The tournament is open to players 14 years and older. Self-identified skill levels for each bracket include Beginner 2.0-3.0, Intermediate 3.0-3.5 and Challenge 4.0+.

Teams will compete in a round robin using skill level brackets based on the number of participants. Brackets will be leveled and managed by the tournament directors. Semi and championship matches will be held for each bracket as dictated by the number of participants.

Tournament times will be:

  • Noon to 5 p.m. Friday, May 31 for mixed doubles and finals
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1 men’s doubles and finals, and 1 to 5 p.m. for women’s doubles and finals

Fees raised from the tournament will offset the administration and supply costs, as well as raise funds to support the festival.

Visit Central Oregon (www.visitcentraloregon.com) has agreed to partner with SRMF by granting the funds for the court rental at Fort Rock Park. Sponsorships, lodging partners and vendors will be encouraged as the planning continues.

Volunteers also are needed to help with the tournament. This tournament is a “fund and friend” raiser for the Sunriver Music Festival, with the proceeds supporting the festival.

Information about the Sunriver Music Festival can be found at www.sunrivermusic.org. To volunteer, or ask questions about the tournament, feel free to contact the tournament director at pickleball@sunrivermusic.org.

Sunriver Resort’s Woodlands Golf Course

Directly benefiting Sunriver Music Festival, golfing buddies come together on SunriverResort’s Woodlands Course on June 2 for the 16th annual Swings fore Strings tournament. With a shotgun start and scramble format, this is a lighthearted way to kick off your summer of Sunriver golfing.

Worth noting: a regular 18 holes of golf in prime time at the internationally celebrated and semi-private Woodlands Course is actually higher than this tournament registration. By choosing to play in Swings fore Strings, you get those same 18 holes, PLUS SunriverBrewing beer, PLUS dinner from Sunriver Resort’s Peak Food Truck, PLUS the good feelings knowing you’re supporting Central Oregon’s premier classical music organization – Sunriver Music Festival – and helping ensure the future of music.

Register at sunrivermusic.orgor by calling 541-593-1084.

Learn to Play the Game of Pétanque

Wednesday, June 5, 2024, 10 am at the Mary McCallum pétanque courts.

Presented by Gary Bigham.

Learn to play this popular French outdoor game, which is similar to bocce, horseshoes and lawn bowling. Pétanque is easy to learn and does not require special abilities or experience. This social game is ideal for all ages and Sunriver’s warm summer days. The rules, terminology and techniques of the game will be explained. By the end, you will be ready to play on your own or join the group of regulars that play weekly during the summer. You are welcome to stay after the class and practice with each other. All the equipment needed will be provided. Sign up early, as the class is limited to 12 participants.

Gary Bigham started playing pétanque in Seattle at French-American Chamber of Commerce picnics around 1995, about the same time as the formation of the Seattle Pétanque Club and several other pétanque clubs in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to weekly play, this created the opportunity to play in tournaments with clubs in Portland, Lake Oswego, Edmonds, Walla Walla and others. He has also traveled with members of other pétanque clubs to enter tournaments in France. In 2016, Gary and his wife moved from Kirkland to Sunriver. After two summers of no pétanque, Gary got together with a small group interested in learning the game in the spring of 2019; that’s how the SunriverPétanque Club was born. Since then, the club has grown to about 35 members, with dedicated pétanque courts in Mary McCallum Park.
